- French Derby draw revealed
- Favourite with tough ask in outside stall
- Interesting Gosden runner given nice position
Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) favourite Constitution River has been given a nightmare draw for Sunday’s Group One at Chantilly as 16 declared.
Constitution River Faces Nightmare French Derby Draw
Ryan Moore might be one of the best jockeys in the world but he’s got a huge task on his hands this Sunday in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby).
His mount and current favourite Constitution River has been given a disaster draw of 15 with just one rival outside of him.
No horse has won the French Classic from a double-figure since New Bay in 2015, so it could be a tough ask to win from such a wide position.
However, that being said, Constitution River looks a top horse in the making.
The son of Woottonn Bassett won the Dee Stakes at Chester recently and is the yard’s number one, meanwhile Hawk Mountain and Montreal also line up for Aidan O’Brien.
Chasing a four-timer, powerful connections will be hoping they made the right decision to come over to France with the favourite, instead of the Epsom Derby.
Benvenuto Cellini at this point is the yard’s main hope for the Epsom Derby, but things could all change if O’Brien pulls out Constitution River from the Prix du Jockey Club.
They might see being drawn that wide as a waste, and could opt for Epsom – although that is an unlikely scenario.

It looks a strong line-up, with John & Thady Gosden also supplementing Oxagon earlier on in the week. He won the Craven then came sixth in the 2000 Guineas and could improve for the trip.
